Thermostats, thermal cut-offs

Backer keeps in stock a wide range of thermostats and thermal cut-offs from different brands for use together with stock-kept immersion heaters.

We also have customer designed constructions.

Thermostats are used when a media (e.g. water or air) should be heated up to a predefined temperature and they control/regulate the power supply for e.g. an immersion heater or a duct heater. Thermal cut-offs are used as safety to avoid overheating and normally they are reset manually.

Fields of application:

Domestic heating Immersion heater with
terminal box

Industial baths

>> Further examples
  • Immersion heaters in electric boilers and water heaters
  • Electric batteries
  • Air duct heaters

Tubular element with mounted thermal fuse

>> Description

Most of Backer’s heating elements can be equipped with a thermal fuse. This design offers a big advantage when compared to a separately mounted thermal cut-off.

Elements with diam. 8.5 or 14 mm can be equipped with a replaceable thermal fuse. The silicone rubber bushing containing a thermal fuse is pulled out from the element with a suitable tool. A new unit is then easily mounted.
In elements with permanently mounted fuse the thermal fuse is moulded with compound at the sealing operation and is not replaceable. When the thermal fuse has tripped, the element must be replaced.

>> Technical data
Cut-off temperature To establish correct cut-off temperature, measurements have to be done under normal condition. The cut-off temperature is recommended to be at least 25-30°C above the maximum temperature of the thermal fuse at normal operation.
Connection With permanently mounted thermal fuses normal flat pin connectors can be used. As an alternative connection cables can be spot welded directly on the terminal pin. Round pin connectors are preferred when replacable thermal fuses are used.
Standard Heating elements with mounted thermal fuse are approved
by SEMKO, VDE och UL.

Thermostat and manually resettable thermal cut-offs

- For mounting inside tubular heating elements

The tubular heating elements with diam 8.5 mm can be equipped with a thermostat and a resettable thermal cut-off, mounted at the end of electrical tubular heating element. Heating elements with mounted thermal cut-off and/or thermostat are approved by SEMKO, VDE och UL and are particularly suitable at liquid heating.

To determine the breaking temperature of the resettable cut-off it is advisable to measure the temperature under normal conditions and in intended application. The breaking temperature is recommended to be at least 25-30°C above the maximum temperature of the thermal cut-off at normal operation.
